Madeline Lake, Northwest Territories, Canada

Color Zone: Dark Blue
Is Camping Allowed? No
Entrance Fee? No
Description: Madeline Lake is one of the closest aurora-viewing locations to Yellowknife that is still relatively dark. It is about 26 minutes away from the city center. It’s a popular stopping point for tour groups so it sees a fair amount of traffic especially in the evenings. But in between the lake is quiet enough to hear loons calling. Farther down the Ingraham Trail, Prosperous Lake, Pontoon Lake, Prelude Lake, and Tibbitt Lake are also great stargazing locations. But if you’re renting a car, mileage limits may keep you closer to the city.
