Green River State Wildlife Area, Illinois, United States

Color Zone: Dark Green
Is Camping Allowed? Yes
Entrance Fee? No
Description: Green River is probably the best dark site you will find close to Chicago. On new moon weekends expect to find other stargazers here. It may even be crowded for astronomical events such as meteor showers. There is some light pollution to the east and trees obstructing parts of the sky. But overall it is quite dark, especially to the south. There are also other parking areas to observe from throughout the park, but this is where the small, basic campground is found.

  1. Also since the camp ground is not gated occasionally some non astronomers will camp there with white lights. Be courteous and explain why you are there and try to come up with some compromizes like using cars to block campfire light.
