Description: Padre Island National Seashore is located southeast of Corpus Christi. Looking out over the Gulf of Mexico, the skies are quite dark. Skies are even darker farther south along the beach. But driving beyond the Malaquite Visitor Center requires 4WD and there are no facilities. At the visitor center is a night sky observatory with fences meant to block the wind and stray lights.
